“The Woman King” is the latest movie directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, which portrays the story of the Agojie, the all-female band of warriors who safeguarded the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s.
Mbedu plays Nawi, a young orphan girl who has had to acquire self-sufficiency after fighting all of her adoptive father’s attempts to have her married off.
“It must have been some of the hardest acting this brilliant actor has had to do, because Mbedu is terrific. The role requires endurance because there is a lot of sprinting, jumping, ducking, and impaling.”
