1997-2002: Mafikizolo, Music Revolution and Sibongile
Mafikizolo is a group that burst into the music scene 1997 following their self-titled album, Mafikizolo. Thereafter, they released their 1999 album “Music Revolution” and followed it up by releasing Gate Crushers in 2000, which included his singles, Lotto and Majika.
After a near-fatal crash to one of its members, the group released a critically acclaimed Sibongile album, including hit single Ndihamba Nawe.
2003-2010: Kwela, Van Toeka Af and Six Mabone
In 2003, Mafikizolo released Kwela, which featured Hugh Masekela, who assisted in creating Kwela Kwela, Emlanjeni, and Udakwa Njalo.
In 2005, the group released Van Toeka Af, which featured Mas’ Thokoze and Nisixoshelani.
After the album’s release, Mafikizolo followed it up with the release of Six Mabone in 2006. It featured some hit singles, including O Tswa Kae and Love Potion.
Following their hiatus in 2009, the group released The Best Of, a compilation album.
2011-2018: Reunited and 20
Mafikizolo resumed work in 2013 following the release of their internationally acclaimed single “Khona,” which featured Uhuru.
In 2014, the group performed the single live at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
Their first album followed up in 2013 and was titled “Reunited.” After the album’s release, the group won numerous awards at the 20th South Africa Music Awards.
With a massive focus on promoting the album, the group embarked on a UK tour and performed in Coventry, London, and Manchester. The group, Mafikizolo, was nominated for Best African Act at MTV Europe Music Awards.
Following the success of Reunited, there was the release of a follow-up album titled “20,” which was in honor and celebration of their 20th anniversary in the entertainment industry.
Mafikizolo featured Nigerian sensation Yemi Alade in Ofana Nawe, part of the album. At the 24th South African Music Awards, the album “20” received three nominations and won the Duo/Group of the Year and Best Engineered Album categories.
2019-Present: Idwala
After being without an album for three years, Mafikizolo eventually announced their latest album release date for 2022.
Before that, their single “Mamezala,” featuring South African musician Simmy, was released in 2021. The song was number 9 on the Radio Monitor Charts.
Their 12th studio album, titled Idwala, was released in August 2022.
